Tokenized equity review
Kraken xStocks review: useful access, not share ownership
Kraken xStocks can provide fractional, transferable exposure to more than 100 companies and ETFs, but the token holder does not own the underlying share. There are no voting rights or direct dividend rights. In the EEA, the contractual pricing is roughly 1% above the reference to buy and 1% below it to sell, before any additional route-specific fee.
xStocks are unavailable in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. EEA customers use a different trading route.

What an xStock is
An xStock is a token issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited. Its value is designed to track a named share or ETF. Kraken markets more than 100 of these instruments, with a $1 minimum and transfers to supported self-custody wallets.
In the EEA terms, the instrument is described as tokenized debt or a certificate referencing an underlying asset. That wording is more precise than “a stock on the blockchain.” The economic exposure may follow a stock, but the legal rights do not.
Rights compared with a conventional share
| Right or feature | Conventional share | xStock |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership of underlying share | Generally direct or beneficial, depending on custody | No |
| Voting rights | Depends on share class, custody and jurisdiction | No |
| Direct dividend right | Depends on share class and holding structure | No |
| Residual claim on company assets | Depends on share class and insolvency priority | No |
| Transfer on supported blockchain | Usually no in a conventional brokerage structure | Yes |
| Issuer and token infrastructure risk | No separate token issuer in a conventional holding | Yes |
Kraken describes an adjustment that may increase the holder’s token quantity when the underlying company makes a distribution. That can reproduce part of the economic effect of a dividend. It does not give the token holder a legal dividend claim against the listed company.
What “backed 1:1” does and does not mean
Backed states that the instruments are backed by underlying assets. This arrangement aims to support price exposure. It does not eliminate issuer, depositary, counterparty, operational, liquidity or regulatory risk.
The holder is not a party to the custody agreement for the underlying shares. If an entity in the chain fails, the token may not behave like a share held in a segregated brokerage account. Kraken’s legal disclosure says total loss is possible.
Trading hours and platforms
Most Kraken xStocks trade from Sunday 20:00 ET to Friday 20:00 ET, subject to market holidays. Kraken currently lists ten named xStocks as available 24/7. Availability therefore depends on the token, not only on the product label.
Some on-chain venues may operate on a continuous schedule. xStocks Perps are also a separate leveraged derivative with 24/7 availability. Neither should be used to describe the hours of the standard xStock product.
EEA clients face another important difference. They can buy, sell or convert xStocks against fiat after an appropriateness questionnaire, but do not receive the same Kraken Pro order-book or API access. The route is Convert.
Costs
For EEA customers, the contractual examples describe a purchase price about 1% above the reference and a sale price about 1% below it. A same-price buy and sell would therefore lose about 2% to the two sides of the spread before any other route-specific fee.
| Reference value | Example transaction | Indicative value under 1% spread |
|---|---|---|
| $100 | Buy | About $101 paid |
| $100 | Sell | About $99 received |
This is an illustration of the contractual mechanism, not a live quote. Instant Buy, conversion or currency costs may also apply. A “zero additional fee” route must not be read as zero total cost.
Availability
Kraken’s updated availability page excludes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as generally prohibited locations. Additional product or token restrictions can apply. EEA customers must complete an appropriateness questionnaire.
Availability at the account level is the final check. A public country list can change faster than an independent review.
Verdict
xStocks solve a real access problem: small units, longer trading hours and transferability. They can suit a user who understands the token structure and values those features more than shareholder rights.
They are not a clean substitute for long-term share ownership. The missing votes and direct dividend claim, the extra issuer chain and a potentially material spread all matter. For a buy-and-hold investor with brokerage access, the conventional share is usually the simpler legal instrument. For a crypto-native trader, xStocks can be useful if those trade-offs are deliberate.
